The UAE taxes companies, not your salary — and neither one gives you a credit.
There is no US income tax treaty with the UAE, no totalization agreement, and no personal income tax on employment income. The 9% corporate tax introduced in 2023 sits on businesses, not on your pay, so it produces nothing to credit against your US return.

What that means on your return
Dubai and Abu Dhabi rents are among the highest anywhere, which makes the foreign housing exclusion the single largest item on most UAE returns. Qualified expenses above 16% of the exclusion come out of the tax base, capped at 30% of the exclusion unless your city qualifies as a higher-cost locality.
The UAE corporate tax is a business tax. Paying it through a company you own does not create a personal foreign tax credit on your salary or your distributions, which is the assumption I correct most often here.
Free-zone company ownership is where UAE returns get genuinely complicated: Form 5471 for a controlled foreign corporation, and PFIC questions on funds held inside it. That is a Complex Return at $995, and it is worth knowing before you incorporate.
UAE labor law entitles most private-sector employees to an end-of-service gratuity — 21 days' basic salary for each of the first five years, 30 days for each year after, capped at two years' pay, and calculated on basic salary only, so housing and other allowances don't count toward it even though they do count as US income when paid. It is compensation for services performed abroad, taxable for the year it was earned rather than the year it was paid out.
The UAE is still part of the IRS's Arabian Peninsula combat zone designation from Operation Desert Storm. That does not make a civilian contractor's pay tax-free — the Section 112 income exclusion is for military members, not DoD contractors or support staff. Civilians serving in the zone in direct support of the Armed Forces do get an automatic Section 7508 extension on filing and payment deadlines, the same relief deployed service members get.

Questions I get about the United Arab Emirates
I own a free-zone company. Does that change my US return?
Substantially. A company you control is likely a controlled foreign corporation, which brings Form 5471 and possibly GILTI into the return, and investments held inside it raise PFIC questions. A single Form 5471 I will do; a group of operating entities needs a firm.
The UAE now has corporate tax. Can I credit it?
Not against your personal US income tax on salary. It is a tax on the company, not on you, so it does not travel to your Form 1116.
I support US forces from a base in the UAE as a civilian contractor. Is my pay exempt because it's a combat zone?
No. The combat-zone income exclusion in Section 112 applies to military pay, not to civilian contractors. If you're serving in the zone in direct support of the Armed Forces, you get an automatic extension on filing and payment deadlines — not an exemption from the tax itself.
How is my UAE end-of-service gratuity taxed?
As compensation for services performed abroad, for the US tax year it is properly attributed to — usually the year it was earned rather than the year it was paid. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion can cover it if you have room left under the cap that year.
Do I owe US tax if the United Arab Emirates taxes nothing?
You file, and often you owe nothing. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion covers $130,000 of earned income for tax year 2025, and the foreign housing exclusion can cover more. Above that, US tax applies with no foreign tax credit available.
When is my return due?
15 June, under the automatic extension for filers living abroad. Form 4868 moves it to 15 October, and I file the extension free.
Do I have to file an FBAR for my Emirati bank account?
If your foreign accounts together passed $10,000 at any point in the year, yes. You can file it free through FinCEN's own system. The non-willful penalty for not filing is $16,536.
I have not filed for several years. What now?
The Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures: three returns, six FBARs and Form 14653 certifying non-willfulness. Penalties are waived. Note that the IRS terminated the separate Delinquent FBAR Submission Procedures around 1 July 2026.
Filing from the United Arab Emirates this year?
Fifteen minutes with the Enrolled Agent who will prepare and sign it. Complete return, $599.
An IRS Enrolled Agent working only on US tax for Americans living abroad. I prepare and sign every return myself — 14 years in practice, 11 of them as an Enrolled Agent.
